The sportsmen won 20 medals at the Special Olympics European Summer Games 2014

The Special Olympics European Summer Games 2014 ended in Antwerp, Belgium on 2014, September 9-21. The Special Olympics Azerbaijan attended by the delegation of 42 people. 27 athletes at badminton, basketball, judo, table tennis and swimming competitions won 8 gold, 8 silver and 4 bronze medals of the competition.

Consequently, our basketball team has won the gold medals.

The number of medals won by our athletes in different sports is:

8 gold, 8 silver, 4 bronze.

In order to adapt to the Belgium climate our delegation were hosted by Lommel City Hall on September, 9-12. Another purpose of the "Guest program" was to be acquainted with national customs and traditions, historical monuments, museums of Belgium, and Lommel city as well.

On September 12 – the last day of "Guest program" an official ceremony was organized with the participation of Youth and sports minister of The Republic of Azerbaijan Azad Rahimov, The Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Belgium Fuad Isgandarov and Lommel city mayor Peter Vanvelthoven. The purpose of the ceremony was to erect a monument to Special Olympic athletes of Azerbaijan in front of city hall. The 6 sports type that Azerbaijani athletes represented at European Summer Games are reflected on the monument. Azad Rahimov noticed in his speech: “this event is a novelty in the history of Azerbaijan sport. No monument have been erected to Azerbaijani athletes before.”

After the official part of the event, a banquet for participants began. At the same time, concert of young musicians of symphony orchestra of Azerbaijan State Conservatory held for participants. The Managing Director of Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia Mary Davis, the employee of the Committee Krzysztof Krukowski and the President of the Special Olympics Azerbaijan Shahin Aliyev also attended the ceremony.
